Billing and insurance information
Patients often have questions about their medical bills or insurance. VCU Massey Cancer Center patients will receive bills that say "MCV" on them. Below are the questions we hear asked most often. If we have not addressed your question here, please contact the appropriate service area below.
- For questions about your MCV Hospitals bill, please contact Customer Service at (804) 828-0088 or (800) 638-1636.
- For questions about your MCV Physicians bill, please contact Customer Service at (804) 342-1391.
How much will my medical care cost?
If insured, Massey recommends getting in touch with your insurance plan to determine an estimate of the costs that you will be responsible to cover. For information on hospital charges, please call (804) 828-0088 and ask for Charge Services to receive an estimate for the average charges of hospital services. Please keep in mind that this information is only an estimate and the complexity of the care provided at the time of service may cause significant differences between this estimate and the actual cost of service.
How long do I have to pay my bill?
Massey expects payment on all bills within 30 days of mailing the bill.
What if I cannot afford to pay my bill?
Our financial counselors are available to help you determine eligibility for Medicaid, Medicare, FAMIS or VCU Health Systems' additional Financial Assistance Programs. The Financial Counselors will also assist in setting up payment plans. Please call (804) 828-0966.
Why do I not recognize the name of the physician on my bill?
There are multiple possible scenarios. The physician might have read test results from Laboratory or Radiology services, acted in a supervisory function, or assisted your physician with your procedure.
How do I know if Massey or VCU Health System contracts (or is “in-network”) with my health plan?
VCU Health System recommends that you contact your insurance plan to determine the extent to which your services at VCU Health System will be covered by your plan. Contact information for your plan should be on the back of your insurance card.
Should I bring my insurance card with me to the hospital?
Yes, the information on your insurance card is needed for the hospital to file a claim with your insurance company or companies. When you register, we will ask for information about your insurance coverage and have you sign a few forms. This registration process goes much faster when you bring your insurance information with you.
Will you bill my insurance company for me?
Yes, as a courtesy we will bill your insurance company. It is your responsibility to provide accurate insurance information to VCU Health System and any requested information to your insurance company (accident information, claim forms).
What is a co-payment?
A co-payment is a specific amount of money that an insurance company and our VCC program require the patient to pay at the time of service. The amounts vary by the type of service you are receiving and your insurance plan. Please contact your insurance company to verify this amount.
